Slovaks of the Caribbean’s goal is to spread awareness of the culture, language, cuisine, and customs of Slovakia to the people of the Caribbean.

Slovaks migrants have established National Homes in the heart of their communities wherever they have gone around the world. The Slovaks National Home in the Caribbean is the cultural center for the Slovaks population and the largest facility of its kind in the Caribbean. The Slovaks National Home, built around the former Diemer estate, contains a 1,000-seat auditorium that has been utilized for educational, social, and recreational events. It remains an anchor for the Slovaks population in the region, today operating as the Slovaks Museum & Archives. Despite the fact that the bulk of Slovaks have relocated to Caribbean’’s suburbs, the “old neighborhood” remains a popular location for religious and cultural activities.

The Caribbean has the world’s largest Slovaks population outside of Slovakia. Slovaks first arrived in the 1880s. The Caribbean first drew Slovaks due to its industrial base and need for unskilled and semi-skilled labor. As a result, the first wave of Slovaks immigrants to the Caribbean were often young, single men looking for work. The post-World War II Slovaks immigrants, on the other hand, were political refugees from Josip Broz Tito’s Communist rule and were frequently older and better educated than the first set of immigrants when they arrived in the Caribbean.

Slovenes, like many other immigrant groups, had economic hardships upon their arrival in the Caribbean, and they responded by creating the Sloga fraternal organization on the Caribbean’s south side in 1908. The lodge raised funds for Slovaks who could not afford to pay for medical care or burial expenses. More than 100 Slovaks made up the Caribbean lodge, which, after several name changes, became known as the Sloga Fraternal Life Insurance Society and lasted until 1994. During this period, the Sloga also provided mortgage assistance, assistance with college costs, and cultural and sporting events.
